First visit to Rye and Dengemarsh
As the lock down restrictions are being lifted we are now able to travel further afield and spend more time searching for those special birds.
A quick search through the internet showed that Rye Harbour was still open and that we could walk around if we wanted, to our surprise when we got there the hides were also open as long as we observed social distancing. As usual it was Adam that started to pick off the birds of interest - Avocets, Little Egret and a very special Grey Plover - all in the first few metres.
As we moved around we spotted a beautiful Wheatear and we were alerted to the presence of Little Ringed Plover at the back of the reserve. The view was a little spoilt by the very strong back lit sun but this was more than made up for with aw Turnstone in full plumage.
Dengemarsh was the next port of call as the Dungeness site is closed but you could still follow the footpath through the site. Having read the recent Ploddingbirder updates we really wanted to see a Yellow Wagtail, a bird we had never seen before.
As we drove down the lane there sat perfectly on a concrete post was the most perfect Yellow Wagtail. Adam took the opportunity to take a few shots but as I was driving I never had the chance. I pushed our luck a little and managed to get within 4 metres of the bird, Adam took some fantastic images.
We were able to visit the viewing platform where we saw a pair of Hobbies hawking after dragonflies. The Hobby is a truly spectacular falcon with incredible speed and agility.
As we made our way back to the car I was a little disappointed in that I had not caught an image that I wanted. Driving back along the lane however the Yellow Wagtail was sat on a fence post, this time I had the opportunity to get a photograph with which I was truly happy.
